Chapter 5 - THE SENTENCE THE CAMERA KEPT.
The recording appeared on the ballroom screen.
Claire was kneeling in front of Lily near the staircase, her voice low and cruel.
“After tonight, your father will have a real family. Pack your bag and leave before you embarrass him.”
Lily asked where she should go.
Claire replied, “Children from your mother’s side always find some relative willing to take them.”
The guests shifted uncomfortably. Many had praised Claire’s charity work only minutes earlier.
Ethan looked at them.
“You heard a child being degraded, and none of you moved until the camera made silence embarrassing.”
Claire accused him of performing for sympathy.
“You are choosing an emotional child over your future.”
Ethan answered, “I am choosing my daughter over a woman who called cruelty planning.”
Then the video continued.
Margaret entered after Claire walked away.
Instead of comforting Lily, she handed her the floral bag and said:
“Leave quietly, and your father may still forgive you.”
