Chapter 10 - THE NAME ON THE FINAL ACCOUNT.
The drawing showed three figures holding hands beneath a red heart: Emma, Lily and Daniel.
A fourth figure stood outside the heart beside a hotel window.
Caroline recognized the style.
“Your father drew people exactly like that.”
Emma’s father had supposedly died seven years earlier, but the paper carried red wax from the ballroom’s memorial candles.
Security footage showed a hotel dishwasher placing the drawing beneath Lily’s basket minutes before the ceremony.
The man was located in the employee locker room.
He was Emma’s father, Samuel Bennett, alive after years in federal witness protection. He had returned to expose the final Holloway account but feared appearing before the trust was safe.
Emma did not embrace him immediately.
“You protected documents while your daughter believed both parents were dead.”
Samuel accepted her anger and surrendered the account to the worker council.
Daniel and Emma completed the ceremony only after Lily chose to stand beside them.
The silver ring, eviction file and unsigned job offer entered the workers’ archive.
Then Samuel opened the final account.
The beneficiary was Lily Mercer.
