Chapter 7 - THE SCHOLARSHIP BOUGHT WITH ANOTHER FAMILY’S HOME.
Daniel’s mother, Helen Mercer, entered from the rear of the ballroom.
She admitted serving on the Holloway charity board while raising Daniel on a modest salary. The board promised scholarships for working-class children if she approved emergency housing transfers.
“I told myself I was saving more families than I displaced.”
Ruth’s response was immediate.
“You counted benefits in groups and harm one family at a time.”
Helen had signed the order that removed Caroline, then resigned after discovering the residence system. She never told Daniel because she feared losing his scholarship and their home.
Daniel looked at Lily.
“My education was partly purchased with another child’s displacement.”
He placed his inheritance and law-firm pension under restitution review.
Grant mocked the gesture.
“Guilt does not make him fit to parent.”
Emma replied, “Neither does wealth.”
The worker council voted to suspend every Holloway and Mercer family privilege while independent courts reviewed the trust.
Then Helen produced a letter from Emma’s father.
