Chapter 2 - THE FATHER WHO ARRIVED AFTER THE VALUATION.
Grant Holloway entered wearing a tuxedo more expensive than Emma’s first car.
He did not kneel to Lily. He addressed the judge joining by video.
“My daughter is being absorbed into a family that does not understand her position.”
Daniel rose slowly.
“She asked whether I would stay. You arrived because someone priced her.”
Grant called Daniel a middle-class opportunist who wanted access to the Holloway name.
Emma stepped between them.
“Daniel met us when I was working double shifts at a hospital cafeteria. He loved Lily before he knew a trust existed.”
The trust had begun during a hotel bankruptcy. Housekeepers, cooks, bell staff and maintenance workers surrendered wages in exchange for ownership shares. Emma’s late father had been their elected trustee.
When he died, his vote passed to Lily.
Grant had signed away paternity years earlier, but the trust agreement restored his authority if Emma married without his approval.
Then the family attorney found something worse.
