Chapter 4 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE SILVER RING.
Daniel removed the silver ring and examined the inner band. Emma had bought it from a small estate shop, unaware that a microfilm strip had been sealed beneath the engraving.
Ruth explained that Emma’s father hid records inside ordinary jewelry after Holloway executives began destroying trust files.
The microfilm contained years of emails from Grant.
One message read, “Keep the child off public records until the hotel vote becomes useful.”
Another instructed staff to deny Emma employee housing because “comfort makes people harder to negotiate with.”
Lily looked at Grant.
“Did you make us leave our apartment?”
Grant said adults made difficult business decisions.
Daniel’s voice sharpened.
“Children experience those decisions as cold rooms and empty refrigerators.”
The judge suspended Grant’s emergency petition and ordered a full hearing.
Then Ruth played the final recording.
Emma’s father said Daniel’s name clearly, years before Daniel had met Emma.
“If Daniel Mercer approaches my daughter, do not trust the promise he makes.”
