Chapter 6 - THE MOTHER LOCKED BEHIND ANOTHER NAME.
Emma’s mother, Caroline Bennett, had supposedly died after losing her home during the recession.
The archive showed she was placed in a Holloway-funded assisted-living residence under another name after challenging the employee trust.
Grant called the placement compassionate.
Ruth replied, “A locked room does not become kindness because the sheets are expensive.”
Caroline appeared by secure video, conscious and able to speak. She had written to Emma for years, but the residence returned every letter.
Emma’s voice broke.
“You let me raise a child while believing I had no mother.”
Grant blamed his late father.
Caroline answered, “You renewed the payments after he died.”
Daniel asked the court to preserve every residence record, including files he once processed.
Then Caroline revealed she had sent the microfilm ring to the estate shop so it would eventually reach Emma.
She had not chosen Daniel.
“I warned your father about him because Daniel’s mother signed the first eviction order.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“My mother was a school librarian.”
