Chapter 1 - THE CHILD WHO STOPPED THE DINNER.
The double doors burst open while America’s wealthiest families were raising crystal glasses to themselves.
A seven-year-old girl ran down the center aisle, her cream dress marked with dark red wine, one cheek scraped, and two suited men close behind her.
Several guests recoiled as if poverty were contagious.
“Get that child away from the tables,” a woman in diamonds whispered.
The girl ignored them and grabbed Vincent Callahan’s black suit with both hands.
“Please help me! They’re coming for me!”
Vincent, the most feared hotel owner in Chicago, lowered his wine and studied her face.
One pursuer claimed she had stolen jewelry from a penthouse.
The other called her mother an undocumented maid who had caused trouble.
Vincent rose, revealing five guards behind him.
“Lock every door. No one takes her.”
The girl pressed closer.
“My name is Ava Reyes,” she whispered.
“My mother said your son died because he tried to protect us.”
