Vincent stared at the keycard as if Michael’s hand had reached out of the grave.

Ava opened the small locket around her neck.

Inside was a photograph of Rosa beside Michael, both smiling over a newborn wrapped in a hospital blanket.

On the back, Michael had written, Our daughter, Ava.

The room erupted in disbelief.

Celeste Callahan, Vincent’s elegant daughter-in-law, accused Rosa of seducing Michael for money and inventing a child after his death.

“She lived above a tire shop,” Celeste said.

“She could never raise a Callahan.”

Ava’s face crumpled.

“My mom raised me when none of you even knew my birthday.”

Vincent recognized Michael’s handwriting, but recognition was not proof.

Then Ava repeated the final words Michael had taught Rosa to use if the family ever denied her.

“Ask Grandpa what he buried beneath the lake house chapel.”

Only Vincent and Michael had known about the box hidden there.
