THE TOXIN IN THE CRIB / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - THE PACKAGE ARRIVES.

The large digital monitor on the study wall activated with a burst of harsh static.

Clara frowned and stepped away from the sofa.

The federal agents had supposedly secured the entire internal network.

The screen switched to a live feed from the mansion's front security gate.

A delivery drone hovered perfectly still in the night air.

It slowly lowered a small, unmarked black box onto the front steps.

The mansion's automated security scanner analyzed the package.

The screen flashed a bright, pulsating red warning graphic.

It was the exact biohazard symbol that had appeared on the baby bottle.

Clara’s heart stopped.

Agnes and Julian were in federal custody, and the matriarch was being processed by federal agents.

There was supposedly no one left in the Sterling family who could have sent the package.

The automated system chimed, displaying an incoming message from an untraceable number.

“They were always too sloppy. I will handle this myself.”

Clara backed away from the screen as her protective instincts flared again.

She realized the conspiracy had not started with her husband or her mother-in-law.

Someone else was pulling the strings from the shadows—someone with enough authority to bypass the FBI's lockdown.

The smart hub clicked.

The heavy metal shutters over the study windows began closing on their own.

Someone was locking her inside the house again.

Clara grabbed a heavy bronze statue from the desk and positioned herself in front of her sleeping baby.

The handle of the private study door slowly began to turn.
