Chapter 1 - THE KEY INSIDE THE SHOE STOOL.

Vanessa stood cuffed beside the unsigned transfer papers while rain struck the mansion windows. Ms. Carter lifted the pen with a gloved hand and asked Eleanor whether she had ever agreed to surrender the house.
“Never. She said David was overseas and no one would believe an old woman over his wife.”
David’s face remained on the television. “Mother, I saw everything.”
Vanessa recovered enough confidence to sneer. “A humiliating video does not change ownership.”
Carter opened the probate copy of Thomas Hale’s will. One page had been replaced. The altered version gave the mansion to David, but the page numbers and paper fibers did not match.
Eleanor looked toward Vanessa’s muddy red heels.
“My husband kept the original in the room where no Hale would willingly kneel.”
The officer examined the low shoe stool. A brass corner was loose. Beneath it lay a narrow key and a strip of old photographic film.
