The film led Carter to a locked archive beneath the library stairs. Inside were payroll books, housing agreements and Thomas Hale’s original will.

David expected to inherit the mansion. Instead, the will granted him only a lifetime right to live there. The land and controlling vote belonged to the Fair Haven Covenant, a housing fund Thomas created for retired housekeepers, drivers, cooks and groundskeepers.

Vanessa laughed. “Employees were paid. They do not inherit an employer’s home.”

Eleanor answered, “They surrendered wages when the bank threatened foreclosure. Their money preserved the estate your diamonds advertise.”

The replaced page had erased twenty-three worker beneficiaries and named Vanessa as future trustee if Eleanor became incapacitated.

David stared from the television. “Who certified my mother incompetent?”

Carter turned to the medical attachment. The evaluator was Dr. Julian Cross, owner of the nursing home Vanessa had threatened to use.
