Chapter 3 - THE CHILD WHO CONTROLLED THE MERGER.
Richard Vale arrived with corporate counsel and called the confrontation an attempted extortion.
Elena remained behind her cart.
“I asked for wages the hotel already collected from guests.”
For years, Vale Hotels added mandatory service charges to banquets while telling housekeepers, servers and porters the money funded benefits. The funds instead financed executive renovations and acquisitions.
Elena’s late mother, Maria Reyes, had organized the first employee claim. Before dying, she placed the workers’ shares into a trust for their descendants.
Elena controlled the deciding vote.
If her child was born, the baby would become successor beneficiary. If Adrian gained guardianship, Richard could combine that vote with Vanessa’s family holdings and approve the merger.
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
“You did not hide a relationship. You designed a transfer.”
Richard said the merger would protect thousands of jobs.
A housekeeper nearby answered, “Our jobs are always used as shields when owners protect their fortunes.”
Then counsel opened the trust schedule.
