Chapter 4 - THE BRIDE SELECTED LIKE AN INVESTMENT.
Vanessa demanded access to every engagement file.
The documents showed Richard’s advisers had selected Adrian because he could connect the Vale family shares to Elena’s worker trust through paternity and marriage. Vanessa’s courtship had been mapped like a merger campaign.
“You scheduled my feelings,” she told her father.
Richard replied that wealthy families could not leave succession to chance.
Elena looked down at her uniform.
“Poor women are told pregnancy is a personal mistake. Rich families treat children like voting instruments.”
Vanessa discovered she had signed a “family stability statement” during wedding planning. Hidden inside it was support for Adrian’s custody petition.
She had been told the page concerned travel insurance.
Elena did not excuse her.
“You signed something that could take my child. Not knowing why does not make the page harmless.”
Vanessa surrendered the statement and stepped away from the merger committee.
Then hospital records confirmed Adrian’s paternity.
