Chapter 8 - THE MOTHER WHO PRESERVED FILES, NOT WOMEN.
Caroline Vale arrived under federal subpoena and claimed she entered witness protection after discovering Richard’s fraud.
Vanessa did not move toward her.
“You watched me mourn you while using my name to market a program that frightened pregnant workers.”
Caroline said remaining hidden allowed her to preserve evidence.
Denise replied, “Evidence stayed preserved. Women did not.”
Clinic records showed Caroline had blocked several custody transfers, but she also approved Elena’s emergency-guardian form to keep Richard from selecting a stranger.
Elena answered, “You still assigned my child to someone without asking me.”
No one was allowed to become a hero simply because another person had done worse.
The employee council placed Caroline, Elena and Vanessa under independent review while keeping control with elected workers.
Then Richard’s private emails revealed a final pressure point: he had threatened to cancel medical coverage for hundreds of hotel employees unless Caroline cooperated.
