Claire explained that Hale Memorial offered emergency transport and private recovery care to women without enough insurance. Before treatment, families were pressured to sign “temporary protection agreements.”
The agreements transferred homes, insurance proceeds and guardianship authority to the Hale Family Foundation if a patient was later declared unstable.
“Poor women were told the ambulance could wait until the paperwork was complete,” Claire said. “Wealthy women were treated first and asked questions later.”
Victor called the program charity.
Nurse Mary answered, “Charity does not begin with a locked door.”
Claire had discovered the scheme while working in hospital billing. When she tried to warn Emily, Victor placed her under an alias and told the family she disappeared voluntarily.
Emily asked why none of the eight men spoke.
One uncle lowered his eyes. Each relative received annual distributions from properties taken through the agreements.
Then Marsh opened the oldest file.
