Chapter 3 - THE TRUST BUILT BY WORKERS.
Emily’s mother, Ruth Hale, had been an emergency-room nurse, not the silent society wife Victor described.
After watching uninsured families delay treatment, Ruth created the Family Recovery Trust with payroll contributions from nurses, orderlies, cafeteria workers and military spouses. The fund was meant to pay for ambulances, prenatal care and temporary housing without demanding property in return.
Victor later placed the Hale name over it and called worker contributions private philanthropy.
A retired orderly arrived carrying old payroll slips.
“We paid every payday,” he said. “Then his foundation made us beg for our own money.”
Ruth’s will gave Emily and Claire the deciding vote when they turned thirty. Claire’s false death left Emily as the sole beneficiary.
Victor needed her signature before the trust’s annual audit.
Emily touched her soft neck brace.
“He locked the door because I refused.”
Marsh recovered the unsigned transfer from Victor’s briefcase.
