Chapter 4 - THE SIGNATURE JASON DID NOT READ.
Jason recognized the signature from a deployment-support packet Victor sent while his unit was overseas.
He had believed the form allowed Victor to make medical decisions only if Emily became unconscious.
“You had military counsel,” Emily said quietly. “I had your family telling me not to worry you before a mission.”
Jason did not defend himself.
“I signed without reading the full attachment. My carelessness gave him authority over you. Put my conduct under review.”
Victor smiled as though Jason’s failure erased everything else.
Colonel Marsh stopped him.
“One negligent signature does not excuse a planned attack, falsified records or unlawful confinement.”
The Army legal office confirmed the packet had been altered after Jason signed it. But he had also ignored two messages from Emily about the Hale Foundation because Victor described them as family arguments.
Jason lowered his eyes.
“I trusted the man in the tailored suit over the woman asking me to listen.”
Then detectives restored a deleted voicemail.
