Chapter 8 - THE SISTER RAISED UNDER ANOTHER NAME.
Anna Hale was located safely in Baltimore, where she worked as a public-school counselor under the name Anna Brooks.
She had been born before Victor married Ruth. To protect his old-money reputation, he placed the baby with a hospital orderly and later described the woman as an irresponsible employee who had stolen a child.
Anna learned the truth only after Ruth contacted her in secret.
Victor called the arrangement a private adoption.
The retired orderly stood from the corridor bench.
“You took a working woman’s daughter, then called her lucky because the replacement home had money.”
Anna joined by secure video but refused a dramatic reunion.
“I will meet my sisters when we decide it is safe. I am not another exhibit in Victor Hale’s downfall.”
Her records contained Ruth’s original trust charter. It required control to pass to a board elected by patients, hospital workers and military families if any Hale used coercion.
The clause had activated years earlier.
