Chapter 6 - THE SILENCE EMILY BOUGHT.
Emily admitted signing the agreement after Victor threatened to cancel her prenatal coverage and remove Claire’s name from the missing-person database forever.
“I believed silence would protect my baby and help me find my sister.”
Claire’s disappointment was visible.
“Your fear was real. So were the other women who lost care while the evidence stayed hidden.”
Emily placed the settlement and every trust benefit she had received under independent review. She did not ask grief to erase her choice.
Victor mocked her confession.
“You all benefited from my system.”
Nurse Mary answered, “You created the emergency, then sold relief as generosity.”
Investigators found that Emily’s agreement contained an evidence-release clause. If she ever accused Victor publicly, the foundation could label her unstable and seize her share.
The clause had been drafted by Laura Hale, Victor’s sister and a federal benefits attorney.
Laura was not among the eight relatives.
