Chapter 1 - The Joke That Ended the Engagement

Cameron pressed Evelyn’s face into the engagement cake while black-tie guests gasped.
Seven-year-old Jacob ran to her, crying.
“Stop! Don’t do that to her!”
Cameron smiled.
“Learn to take a joke. A banquet worker’s daughter should be grateful she was invited to have a wedding.”
Evelyn wiped Jacob’s tears before cleaning her own face.
“You did nothing wrong. I’m taking you home.”
She removed Cameron’s slim band, placed it beside the ruined cake and kept the solitaire inherited from her mother.
“This engagement ends tonight.”
The ballroom doors opened.
Arthur Whitmore entered with two security officers, studied Evelyn’s frosting-covered face and Jacob’s terror, then pointed to Sloane’s phone.
“Save that recording. No one leaves.”
Cameron called it harmless fun.
Evelyn faced him.
“Humiliation is always funny to the person standing above the victim.”
Sloane replayed her video.

Cameron’s voice could be heard saying, “Once she breaks in public, the judge will give us Jacob by midnight.”
