Chapter 3 - The Judge Who Priced a Child

Judge Vale called the petition a precaution for Jacob’s protection.

Evelyn held it toward him.

“You wrote that I screamed, damaged the cake and frightened him two hours before it happened. That is not protection. It is a script.”

Vale said a woman from a working-class family lacked experience managing generational wealth.

Evelyn’s voice sharpened.

“My mother worked sixteen-hour shifts in Whitmore kitchens. You would still call her unqualified beside a drunken heir wearing cuff links.”

Cameron warned her not to insult the family supporting her.

“My mother’s recipes built your banquets,” Evelyn replied. “Workers funded your hotels with wages they never recovered. Stop calling theft support.”

Sloane admitted Vale promised her a foundation position if she captured Evelyn appearing unstable.

Evelyn did not excuse her.

“You feared losing access, so you helped them take a child from the woman who raised him.”

Arthur ordered Vale detained.

Then Jacob removed a folded note from his jacket.

His mother had told him to open it if Cameron ever tried to claim custody.
