Chapter 2 - The Custody Trap Behind the Cake

Sloane claimed Cameron wanted only a viral engagement prank.
Arthur ordered the full recording displayed on the ballroom screen.
It showed Cameron weakening the top cake tier, rehearsing Evelyn’s position and telling Sloane to capture her crying.
Jacob’s late mother had left him an eighty-million-dollar trust.
Evelyn was his temporary guardian.
If Cameron made her appear unstable, he would become the nearest Whitmore relative and control the money.
Cameron pointed at Evelyn’s stained gown.
“Look at her. Emotional, dramatic and unfit for this family.”
Evelyn’s answer silenced the room.
“You create the wound, then hire a judge to diagnose the bleeding.”
Guests who had laughed at the “caterer’s daughter” suddenly looked away.
Jacob held Evelyn’s hand.
“She never scares me. Cameron does.”
Security found an emergency guardianship petition on Cameron’s phone.
It described Evelyn’s breakdown before the humiliation occurred.
The approving judge was among the guests.
Judge Leonard Vale rose slowly.

Sloane lowered her eyes.
“He paid me to keep filming—and promised me Evelyn’s place after she lost Jacob.”
