Chapter 1 - THE SECOND BRACELET.
Caroline extended her hand from the foot of Emma’s hospital bed.
“Come with Mommy. Your grandmother cannot keep you anymore.”
Emma backed behind the raised rail and hugged her stuffed rabbit.
“You are not my mother! You came after Grandpa died!”
Ruth stood outside the doorway while two officers blocked her calmly. Caroline raised a discharge folder and claimed Emma was confused.
Head Nurse Olivia Grant checked the archived record.
“This authorization was changed today. Ruth’s guardianship remains valid.”
Security footage showed Caroline’s attorney passing an envelope to a records clerk before the edit.
Then Emma opened a hidden pocket in the rabbit and removed a memory card.
“Grandpa told me to hide this if Caroline came.”
The recording showed Caroline beside two newborn bassinets.
Ruth whispered, “There were two babies?”
