THE CHILD SHE CAME TO CLAIM / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - THE FOLDER TAKEN FROM THE CRASH.

Ruth admitted arriving at the crash site before police.

Caroline had called her and claimed Michael was injured near the hospital service road. When Ruth arrived, Caroline was removing a leather folder from his car.

“I froze,” Ruth said. “She threatened to report me for stealing Lily’s placement money.”

Emma’s eyes filled.

“You let her take Dad’s evidence?”

Ruth did not hide behind fear.

“Yes. I protected the child beside me and abandoned the child I could not see.”

Caroline accused Ruth of inventing a confession to gain sympathy.

Olivia produced ambulance footage showing Caroline leaving with the folder while Ruth remained beside Michael.

The donor-placement ledger was found in Caroline’s safe. It listed twenty-seven infants from low-income families whose medical debts disappeared after custody transfers.

One entry was different.

Emma and Lily had not been placed because of debt.
