Chapter 3 - THE PRICE OF A WEALTHY FAMILY.
The hospital refused to release Lily’s location, citing privacy rules.
Ruth answered, “Privacy protected the family that hid her, not the child who was separated.”
A social worker obtained an emergency court order and found Lily living with a wealthy donor couple in Lake Forest. She was safe, healthy and had been told her twin sister died at birth.
Caroline claimed she arranged the placement because Michael could not support two infants.
Ruth’s voice sharpened.
“He worked nights, sold his truck and raised Emma without asking you for a dollar.”
Caroline replied that love did not create financial stability.
Emma held the rabbit tighter.
“Grandma gave me stability. She just did it without a mansion.”
The donor family had paid the Pierce Foundation two million dollars for a “family legacy contribution” months after Lily’s placement.
Then the receipt appeared.
