Caroline called the second bracelet a hospital printing error.
Olivia refused to accept the explanation.
“Errors do not usually arrive with matching footprints and separate medical charts.”
Ruth said Emma’s father, Michael Pierce, had brought one baby home eight years earlier and claimed the mother died during delivery. He never mentioned another child.
Caroline insisted Michael had chosen her as Emma’s legal mother before his death.
Emma looked at the cream suit and pearl earrings.
“You never sent a birthday card until Dad’s trust became mine.”
The family trust owned forty percent of Pierce Children’s Hospitals, including the Chicago ward surrounding them. If Caroline gained guardianship, she would control Emma’s voting shares.
The second file showed another infant discharged under the name Lily Pierce.
Her guardian address belonged to a luxury residence owned by Caroline’s family.
