THE GIRL THE BRIDE SLAPPED / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Photograph That Stopped the Wedding

Ruby stood beneath the crystal chandelier in her gray banquet uniform while hundreds of black-tie guests stared as if a poor girl’s grief were another interruption to the ceremony.

“My mother told me to bring this to the Cole family.”

Vanessa’s face twisted with rage.

“You are a waitress looking for attention. Do not drag your cheap little tragedy into my wedding.”

She slapped Ruby across the face.

Ethan immediately stepped between them.

“Enough. Touch her again, and this wedding ends before you reach the altar.”

Ruby’s cheek burned, but she raised the worn photograph.

“Please look at the girl wearing the swallow pendant.”

Ethan unfolded it.

On the back were the words: Margaret Cole, 1968—for my sister Anna.

Margaret covered her mouth.

“That pendant belonged to my missing sister.”

Ethan looked at the identical silver swallow around Ruby’s neck.

“Was Anna your grandmother?”

Ruby wiped her tears.

“She was my mother. She died last month and told me you were my family.”

Margaret stepped forward, overwhelmed.

“You are not alone anymore.”

Ethan placed his jacket around Ruby and ordered security to escort Vanessa out.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You fools are welcoming a banquet girl because of one photograph.”

Then she pulled a sealed DNA report from her bridal bouquet.

It named Ruby as Ethan’s biological daughter.
