Chapter 3 - The Mothers Chosen for the Rich

Vanessa’s mother, Lydia Vale, entered the ballroom wearing diamonds purchased through the Cole Family Foundation.
She dismissed Anna’s letter as the revenge of an unstable employee.
“Girls from desperate families invent violations when wealthy families stop paying their bills.”
Ruby stepped toward her.
“My mother died waiting for medication your foundation refused to cover. She did not invent poverty. Your family manufactured it.”
Lydia admitted the foundation recruited young female employees for fertility research, but claimed every participant signed consent forms and received compensation.
Margaret demanded the original contracts.
The signatures had been collected from payroll documents, housing applications and hospital forms.
Women who could barely read legal English had unknowingly surrendered reproductive rights while believing they were applying for employee health care.
The Cole family called it medical innovation.
The workers had called it the basement clinic.
Ethan faced Lydia.
“You created children as insurance for family bloodlines.”
Lydia replied coldly.
“Old families survive because someone must make decisions ordinary people are too emotional to understand.”
Ruby’s tears stopped.
“You mean poor women were useful enough to carry your heirs but too ordinary to raise them.”
Federal agents were summoned.
Vanessa tried to leave, but Margaret blocked her.
“You knew before tonight.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Of course I knew. Ruby was never supposed to enter this ballroom.”
She revealed that Anna had sent the photograph three times.
Each package had been intercepted by the wedding planner.
The planner was Lauren Vale—Vanessa’s older sister.
Lauren had disappeared that morning with the original fertility records.
