Chapter 2 - The Daughter Ethan Never Knew
The ballroom fell silent as Ethan read the DNA report twice.
Ruby stared at him.
“My mother never told me who my father was. She only said the Cole family owed us the truth.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“There is your truth. Ethan had a secret child with a hotel maid, and now she has arrived dressed like staff to claim a fortune.”
Ruby’s voice sharpened.
“My mother worked two jobs. Do not use her uniform as an insult when women like her cleaned the rooms where women like you learned to feel superior.”
Ethan denied ever meeting Anna as an adult.
The test showed a parent-child match, yet the dates made no sense.
Ruby was sixteen.
Ethan had spent that year recovering from a serious accident at a private Cole medical center.
Margaret suddenly looked toward the family physician seated among the guests.
Dr. Samuel Crane attempted to leave.
Security stopped him.
He admitted Ethan’s genetic material had been stored during treatment, but insisted he had no knowledge of Ruby’s birth.
Ruby opened her mother’s final letter.
Anna wrote that she had been hired as a young seamstress for the Cole bridal company and was later forced into a “family fertility program.”
Ethan’s face hardened.
“You used my body and hers without consent?”
Vanessa called the accusation absurd.
Then Margaret recognized the signature approving the program.
It belonged to her late husband, Charles Cole.
