Chapter 5 - The Bride Who Was Ruby’s Sister
Grace revealed that Anna delivered twin girls at the Cole medical center.
Charles ordered one child placed with Lydia Vale, whose family had lost influence and needed a stronger connection to the Coles.
That child became Vanessa.
Anna was told the second baby had died.
She escaped the clinic with Ruby before Charles could take her too.
Vanessa’s face went white.
“That woman was not my mother.”
Ruby answered bitterly.
“She was good enough to give you life, but not wealthy enough for you to call her family.”
Lydia insisted she had raised Vanessa with every privilege and therefore deserved to be considered her real mother.
Grace’s voice became hard.
“You bought a baby from a frightened seamstress, then taught that child to despise women wearing the same uniform.”
Vanessa looked at Ruby’s gray blouse as if seeing her own stolen history reflected back at her.
For one moment, shame appeared.
Then she turned cruel again.
“You grew up poor because Anna ran. I grew up protected because my mother understood survival.”
Ruby replied, “You were protected by the same people who left our mother to die.”
DNA testing confirmed they were twins.
Margaret ordered Vanessa’s access to the Cole trust suspended until the adoption fraud was investigated.
Vanessa screamed that Ruby had ruined her wedding and stolen her family.
Ethan faced her.
“Ruby did not steal anything. She walked into the room your lies were occupying.”
Federal agents arrested Lydia and Dr. Crane.
Vanessa was not arrested because the evidence showed she had been a child when the transfer occurred.
Then Grace handed Ruby Anna’s second letter.
