Chapter 9 - The Bride Who Chose the Next Heir
Vanessa confessed that she used Ethan’s stored genetic material after learning Ruby could inherit Charles’s shares.
She intended Maria’s baby to become a competing heir controlled through a private guardianship.
If Ruby exposed the truth, Vanessa would present a newborn with a direct claim to Ethan’s fortune and portray Ruby as a jealous outsider attacking an innocent child.
Ethan’s voice turned ice-cold.
“You used Maria’s body, my identity and an unborn baby as pieces in a trust dispute.”
Vanessa answered desperately.
“I spent my whole life knowing one secret could send me back to the world your family taught me to despise.”
Ruby’s anger erupted.
“You were never afraid of poverty. You were afraid people might treat you the way you treated me.”
Vanessa was arrested for medical fraud, coercion and conspiracy.
The guests who had laughed when Ruby was slapped now watched security escort the bride through the same ballroom doors.
No one applauded her elegance.
No one protected her name.
Maria retained full parental rights, while Ethan agreed to accept legal responsibility without forcing any relationship she did not choose.
The employee board transferred Cole Bridal into majority worker ownership.
Ruby refused an executive title.
She asked only that Anna’s name replace Charles’s on the foundation.
At the unveiling, Margaret gave Ruby the silver swallow pendant’s original case.
Inside was a third photograph.
It showed Anna beside Grace, both visibly pregnant at the same time.
On the back, Anna had written:
ONLY ONE OF US GAVE BIRTH TO RUBY.
Grace closed her eyes.
