Chapter 7 - The Matriarch Who Signed the First Form

Margaret admitted that decades earlier she had signed the original research authorization.
After losing several pregnancies, Charles convinced her the clinic would help wealthy families preserve bloodlines while offering poor women generous compensation.
Margaret never entered the basement or spoke to the employees.
She accepted polished reports because questioning them might have destroyed the family image she spent her life protecting.
Ruby faced her.
“You did not need to see the basement. You only needed not to care who was crying inside it.”
Margaret did not defend herself.
“You are right.”
The ballroom guests shifted uncomfortably.
Many had donated to the foundation, attended its galas and praised its work without asking why the women receiving “assistance” always signed confidentiality agreements.
Margaret publicly surrendered control of the family trust and asked workers and victims to form an independent board.
Vanessa laughed.
“Now you want applause for giving back power after keeping it for fifty years?”
Margaret answered, “No. I want consequences, even if they begin with me.”
The employee board froze luxury spending and reopened every denied medical claim.
Staff members who had served champagne moments earlier sat at the head table while society guests waited behind velvet ropes.
The reversal was immediate and satisfying.
Then Grace revealed why Margaret’s name appeared on the current file.
Charles had stored embryos using her genetic material decades earlier.
Someone planned to create a new Cole heir after Ethan’s wedding.
The receiving clinic was operating beneath the hotel.
Security opened a locked service elevator.
Inside was a nursery prepared for a newborn.
