Chapter 2 - The Custody Order Written Before the Storm
Judge Everett Black arrived before the officers finished securing the foyer.
He carried an emergency order transferring Lily into Victoria’s care and suspending Sarah’s parental rights.
The petition described Sarah’s violent entry, Lily’s tears and the damaged heel—details that had not existed when the judge signed it that morning.
Sarah held the document in one hand and Lily in the other.
“You wrote the verdict before she frightened my daughter.”
Black did not flinch.
“Federal agents live dangerous lives. The Harrington family can provide stability you cannot.”
Victoria adjusted her satin robe.
“Lily belongs in a home with standards, not dragged between cheap apartments and crime scenes.”
Sarah’s voice hardened.
“My mother cleaned houses for women like you. She taught me that honest work has more dignity than inherited cruelty.”
Daniel admitted Victoria had staged previous incidents to make Lily appear troubled and Sarah reckless.
Black dismissed him as an emotional father.
Lily looked at the judge.
“You only believe her because she is rich.”
The child’s words silenced the room.
Agents opened the memory card.
The footage showed Victoria rehearsing statements with Judge Black through a private video call.
“If Sarah raises her voice, call it instability,” he instructed.
“If Lily cries, call it trauma.”

Lily’s name was only one among thirty-seven.
