Chapter 4 - The Mother They Planned to Bury
Sarah’s supervisor ordered her into protective custody after investigators found a staged vehicle accident prepared along her usual route.
Victoria claimed she knew nothing about it.
Daniel did not believe her.
“You threatened Lily because Sarah was getting close to the foundation accounts.”
Victoria sneered.
“You were happy to spend that foundation money until your conscience became fashionable.”
Daniel admitted the mansion, his suits and Lily’s trust were all tied to the Harrington Children’s Fund.
The fund publicly supported foster families.
Privately, it purchased judges, private schools and residential facilities used to isolate children from parents who challenged powerful donors.
Sarah faced Daniel.
“You knew the money was dirty?”
“I knew the numbers never made sense.”
“And you stayed quiet because the marble was comfortable.”
Daniel accepted the accusation.
“I did.”
Former employees came forward.
A housekeeper lost custody after reporting stolen wages.
A driver’s son was placed in a residential school after his father witnessed illegal campaign payments.
A nurse was labeled unstable after questioning unexplained medication given to children during evaluations.
Victoria called them bitter staff.
Sarah answered, “You always call poor witnesses bitter because truth sounds dangerous when it comes from someone you cannot buy.”
Agents traced the planned accident to a security firm owned by Victoria’s mother, Eleanor Harrington.
Eleanor had supposedly died ten years earlier.
Yet the payment had been authorized that afternoon.
Then the mansion’s locked service elevator opened.
An older woman stepped out wearing a gray housekeeper’s uniform.
