Chapter 5 - The Matriarch Hidden as Staff
Eleanor Harrington removed her gray wig and looked at Daniel without affection.
She had faked her death to direct the custody network beyond public scrutiny.
Daniel’s shock turned to rage.
“You watched me mourn you.”
Eleanor replied, “Grief made you manageable.”
She dismissed Lily’s terror as a necessary pressure point.
“Children cry. Empires survive.”
Sarah stepped closer.
“Only people born above consequences can say that without choking on the words.”
Eleanor admitted selecting Lily because Sarah was investigating Harrington Foundation payments to judges and private detention centers.
Controlling the child would control the mother.
Victoria defended her.
“She protected this family from people who resent success.”
Sarah looked at the chandeliers, marble and cream furniture.
“You did not earn this success. Workers funded it, taxpayers protected it and frightened families paid for it.”
Eleanor revealed that Sarah had once been a child in the same network.
Her mother, Teresa Delgado, had worked as a hotel bookkeeper and discovered the first secret transfers.
Judge Black removed Sarah from Teresa’s care after describing night shifts and a rented apartment as neglect.
Sarah had been told Teresa died soon afterward.
Eleanor smiled.
“You became a federal agent because we placed you with the right family.”
Sarah’s eyes burned.
“I survived because my foster mother loved me. Do not claim credit for the wound.”
Then the housekeeper uniform’s pocket began ringing.
