Chapter 1 - THE EVIDENCE BENEATH HER FORK.

Maya remained seated as the steel door opened behind Rhea.
Warden Evelyn Price entered with two federal inspectors.
Rhea removed her hand from Maya’s shoulder.
“Routine inspection,” Evelyn announced.
Maya looked at the meal scattered across the floor.
“Then start with the cameras.”
One navy-uniformed officer claimed the cafeteria camera had failed. Maya answered, “It worked when you accused me of threatening staff yesterday.”
Rhea smiled thinly.
“In here, your word is worth less than a tray.”
Maya finally stood.
“That is why I never relied on my word.”
She lifted the fork she had kept pointed safely downward. A tiny black memory card was taped beneath the handle.
The card contained footage of Rhea taking meals from women who could not afford commissary, then selling those trays through a staff-controlled account.
The inspectors turned toward Evelyn.
She did not look surprised.

“Who gave you access to evidence that was supposed to be destroyed?”
