THE TRAY THEY TOOK. / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - THE GIRL IN MAYA’S FIRST PRISON PHOTOGRAPH.

Anthony Torres appeared by secure video from a federal courthouse.

He admitted sending vulnerable young women into the vocational pipeline after being told the program prevented homelessness.

“You sent poor girls to companies owned by political families,” Maya said.

“I believed structured work was safer than the street.”

Camille answered, “You made captivity sound charitable because rich homes were never the destination.”

Anthony had also helped Ryan create the account in Maya’s name, believing it would expose corruption. Ryan used it to frame her.

No one received automatic redemption. Anthony, Linda, Rhea and cooperating staff faced review. Evelyn, Ryan, Governor Hale and Olivia were indicted.

The laundry became a worker-controlled reentry cooperative. Illegal debts were canceled, wages restored and release dates audited publicly.

Maya’s overturned tray was displayed beneath glass.

A plaque read:

“THEY TOOK HER FOOD BECAUSE HUNGER MADE POOR WOMEN EASIER TO CONTROL.”

At the dedication, the steel door unlocked again.
