THE TRAY THEY TOOK. / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - THE WOMEN WHOSE RELEASE DATES DISAPPEARED.

Rhea led inspectors to a sealed vocational wing beneath the laundry.

Camille and eleven other women were found there, alive and forced to package luxury cosmetics for a company marketed as women-owned.

Their release dates had passed, but invented disciplinary charges kept them inside.

Evelyn called the errors administrative delays.

Camille stared at her.

“When a poor woman misses a deadline, you call it violation. When a prison keeps her six months, you call it delay.”

The cosmetics company belonged to Governor Hale’s daughter, Olivia.

Its advertisements praised second chances while former inmates received criminal warrants for unpaid facility debt.

Ryan offered federal prosecutors access to the governor’s records if they reduced his charges.

Maya refused to negotiate for the victims but demanded every offer be public.

Then Camille identified the person who signed her false disciplinary reports.

It was Linda Torres.

Maya turned toward her mother.

Linda began crying.

“They told me signing would get you released.”

Maya’s voice broke.

“You saved me by helping them keep other women here?”
