Maya refused to name her source until the inspectors separated Rhea from the two officers.

Evelyn called the demand manipulative.

Maya answered, “Poor women are punished for protecting witnesses. Administrators call it procedure when they protect payroll.”

The memory card showed more than stolen meals. Women assigned to the prison laundry worked twelve-hour shifts producing hotel linens for a luxury contractor. Their accounts were charged for soap, uniforms and medical visits, leaving many in debt when they were released.

Rhea enforced the quotas. Officers erased complaints.

One inmate, Denise Carter, had lost visitation privileges after refusing overtime.

The contractor was Price Hospitality, owned by the warden’s brother.

Evelyn claimed she had no operational role.

Then a federal inspector opened the cafeteria ledger.

Every confiscated meal was billed to the state as if it had been served.

The reimbursement account belonged to Maya.

She stared at the signature.
