Chapter 3 - THE ACCOUNT THAT SENT HER TO PRISON.
Maya had been a forensic accountant before her conviction.
She was imprisoned after reporting that Price Hospitality used correctional labor while claiming the products were made by union employees.
Evelyn told the inspectors Maya was a convicted fraudster seeking revenge.
Maya replied, “My conviction does not make your invoices true.”
The account in her name had been used to receive state reimbursements, then transfer money into shell companies. Prosecutors had presented those transfers as proof Maya stole from her employer.
Now the same account was operating inside the prison.
Denise stood from the nearest table.
“They sent her here to bury the person who understood the books.”
Rhea warned her to sit down.
The inspectors ordered Rhea away from the inmates.
A recovered email showed Evelyn had requested Maya’s placement in this exact facility despite federal recommendations for a lower-security institution.
The request said Maya posed a threat to staff.
Attached was a statement from Maya’s former fiancé, Assistant District Attorney Ryan Cole.
