Governor Nathan Hale’s office denied involvement and called the prison contracts a successful rehabilitation partnership.
The state paid Price Hospitality millions to train incarcerated women. The company then charged those same women for training, transportation and uniforms.
Maya called it debt manufactured from captivity.
A legislator replied, “Taxpayers expect inmates to contribute.”
Denise stood beside her untouched tray.
“We contributed labor. Your donors collected the contribution.”
The federal team froze the contract and protected witnesses from retaliation.
Maya refused to become their spokesperson without a vote.
“I understand the accounts. They understand what those accounts did to their families.”
The women elected Denise and three others.
Auditors then found a special unit used for inmates who challenged work assignments. Its records listed Maya as approving every transfer through the software Ryan stole.
One transfer concerned Denise’s sister, Camille, supposedly released six months earlier.
