Brittany insisted the account number must have been entered incorrectly.
Head server Rosa Delgado placed the transfer record beside the untouched champagne.
“The money left our medical fund the morning your flowers arrived.”
Brittany’s father, Charles Whitmore, had promised to replace it after his bank completed a loan. He never did.
A dishwasher’s surgery had been postponed. Two retired housekeepers had lost prescription coverage. Yet the ballroom held imported roses, a string quartet and gold chairs rented for one evening.
Brittany called the comparison unfair.
“This wedding supports hundreds of jobs.”
Rosa answered, “Our jobs paid for your wedding.”
Elaine froze all event accounts and ordered an independent audit. Adrian admitted he had signed the transfer after Charles said it was a temporary bridge loan.
His mother’s voice stayed cold.
“Working families miss one payment and lose care. Wealthy men move an entire fund and call it temporary.”
Then Collins found Adrian’s engagement ring listed as collateral for the loan.
