Elaine admitted witnessing the agreement.
Vivian had told her the sale would restore the workers’ medical fund and guarantee permanent housing for retired staff.
Elaine accepted the promise without demanding payment first.
“I believed a written commitment from a wealthy family would be easier to enforce than another public fight.”
Rosa’s disappointment was sharper than anger.
“You taught us never to sign away leverage. Then you did it because the promise came in a tailored suit.”
Elaine stepped down as managing trustee pending review and asked the workers to elect interim leadership.
She did not ask Adrian to defend her.
Brittany tried to use Elaine’s admission to minimize the slap.
Rosa answered, “Her failure does not make your hand innocent.”
The audit showed Vivian never intended to restore the fund. The garden sale proceeds had paid Charles’s campaign debt and Brittany’s luxury apartment.
Then a retired groundskeeper brought in the original workers’ purchase ledger.
