Chapter 1 - THE CAMERA MARGARET FORGOT.
The ambulance arrived before Margaret could leave the patio. Claire held Emma against her shoulder while paramedics confirmed that the child was frightened but physically unharmed. A deputy asked everyone to remain.
Margaret pointed at the spilled cup.
“It slipped. She turned it into an attack because poor people always want a settlement.”
Claire looked at the relatives who had watched without moving.
“My daughter cried for help. Every one of you chose the woman who owns the house.”
Robert ordered a nephew to clean the patio. The deputy stopped him and photographed the cup, red toy and brown splash.
Then Claire showed the camera mounted above the back door. Margaret claimed it had been disconnected for months.
The home-security company called within minutes.
The camera had been disabled that morning—but its cloud backup continued recording.
On the recovered clip, Margaret was heard speaking before she threw the cup:
“Once that child is gone, Evan’s shares return to us.”
Claire stared at Robert.
“Who is Evan?”
