Chapter 9 - THE CHILD USED AS A LOCKBOX.

Robert admitted searching for Evan’s evidence for three years.

He expected Claire to bring the toy after Margaret’s invitation. When Emma refused to put it down, Margaret tried to terrify them into leaving it behind.

“You treated a three-year-old like a locked filing cabinet,” the investigator said.

The court suspended the Hale board, froze assets tied to the repair fund and halted evictions across all twelve developments. Luis and tenant representatives gained access to every maintenance record.

Margaret, Robert and the executives involved faced prosecution and civil claims. Relatives who held corporate positions were investigated for concealment.

Claire’s settlement and electronic signature remained under review. She did not ask motherhood to erase accountability.

Then analysts examined the red toy’s manufacturing code.

It had not been purchased by Evan.

The toy came from a children’s charity run by Margaret.

Inside its hollow wall was a second memory card, placed there before Emma was born.

A woman’s voice began crying.

“My name is Anna Mercer. Robert Hale took my baby and gave him to Margaret.”

Claire stared at Robert.

“Evan was stolen?”
