Chapter 6 - THE PRICE OF A ROOF.
Claire admitted signing the agreement while pregnant, unemployed and facing eviction.
“I chose a roof for my baby. That choice also helped them bury the truth.”
She placed the remaining settlement money under court control and asked for no immunity.
Margaret sneered.
“After taking our money, she still lectures us about morality.”
Luis answered, “Desperation is not the same as power. You created the emergency, then purchased the silence.”
The guests began admitting what they knew. One cousin had seen Evan argue with Robert. An uncle had heard Margaret call Emma “the cafeteria mistake.” None had spoken because their jobs, loans or inheritances depended on the Hales.
Claire looked around the patio.
“You did not stay neutral. You calculated the price of a child’s humiliation.”
Then Emma picked up her red toy from the evidence table. It was a plastic house Evan had given her as a baby.
A deputy noticed numbers scratched beneath it.
They matched a storage unit Evan rented before he died.
Inside were tenant complaints, safety reports and a sealed letter to Margaret.
