Chapter 7 - THE SON MARGARET RESENTED.

Margaret’s anger collapsed into fear.

She admitted Evan had been conceived during a separation from Robert, but insisted biology had nothing to do with the company.

Robert laughed bitterly.

“It had everything to do with why you protected him.”

For years, Margaret had favored Evan publicly while privately resenting the scandal he represented. Robert treated him as an heir only because Evan’s grandfather had placed company shares in his name.

When Evan prepared to acknowledge Emma, those shares would leave Robert’s bloodline entirely.

Emma listened from Claire’s lap.

“Did Grandpa hate Daddy because of me?”

Claire answered before Robert could.

“No. Adults made cruel choices before you were born. None of them belong to you.”

The sealed letter said Evan had discovered Robert altered the scaffold inspection to force him into surrendering control. It did not claim Robert intended a death.

Then investigators found a final attachment: an audio recording from the worksite.

Robert’s voice said, “Let him stand under it. Fear will make him sign.”

A second voice replied, “And if it falls?”
