Chapter 8 - THE CONTRACT BENEATH THE SCAFFOLD.

Margaret denied meaning Evan should be hurt. She claimed the words referred to his position in the company.

The recording continued. She ordered the crew removed but left Evan beneath the defective platform with a contract waiting in the trailer.

Robert admitted wanting to frighten him into signing away his shares.

The prosecutor separated the offenses: coercion, fraud, reckless endangerment and concealment would each be reviewed without allowing one confession to erase another.

The Hale board tried to distance itself from the couple. Tenant representatives arrived with photographs of children living in unsafe units while executives received bonuses for reducing maintenance costs.

Emma’s voting rights went to an independent child advocate, not Claire or the Hales. The advocate joined an elected tenant-worker council.

Claire supported the decision.

“My daughter needs protection, not a throne built from other families’ rent.”

Then the cloud camera revealed something before Margaret threw the cup.

Robert had moved Emma’s red toy beside the barbecue table.
