Chapter 2 - THE FATHER THEY DENIED HER.
Margaret said Evan was only a family friend who had shown Claire kindness.
Claire opened her phone and displayed years of messages, prenatal appointments and a notarized acknowledgment of paternity signed before Evan Hale died in a construction accident.
Robert dismissed the document.
“My son was grieving and confused. Claire worked in our cafeteria. She knew exactly how to get close to him.”
The class insult landed harder than the denial.
Claire replied, “I served your employees lunch. That did not make my child less human.”
The deputy preserved the messages and requested the original paternity file. The family attorney claimed it had been destroyed under a routine retention policy.
A quiet aunt finally stepped forward. She had mailed a DNA report to Margaret three years earlier.
The report confirmed Evan was Emma’s father with near certainty.
Margaret had buried it because Evan’s will gave his child a controlling vote in Hale Residential Group.
