Robert said the repair fund had been moved to stabilize the company after Evan’s accident.
A former maintenance supervisor named Luis Ortega arrived with inspection reports the board had refused to release. Children in Hale properties had slept beside leaking walls while executives classified repairs as cosmetic.
Margaret called Luis ungrateful.
“We gave your family employment for twenty years.”
Luis answered, “You paid wages, then acted as though gratitude replaced safe housing.”
The audit traced Evan’s repair fund to Robert’s lake house, Margaret’s private club dues and the barbecue renovation surrounding them.
Claire looked at the polished patio beneath Emma’s dropped toy.
“This ground was paid for by families whose floors were collapsing.”
Robert blamed the chief financial officer. The officer produced emails showing Robert approved every transfer.
Then an inspection report surfaced from the site where Evan died. He had stopped work after finding defective supports supplied by a Hale affiliate.
The order was canceled six minutes later.
